Iowa Public Radio's Studio One Twitter

Lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun tweeting on behalf of Iowa Public Radio’s flagship music program, “Java Blend.” As the show’s assistant producer, it’s been really great to follow and keep up with our performers on Twitter. I’ve also enjoyed looking back at photos from past live performances and interacting with fans of the show.

Track of the Week: "Grown Ups" by Ramona & The Swimsuits

At KRUI, I recently did a write-up of the lo-fi pop song “Grown Ups” by Iowa-based group Ramona and the Swimsuits:

“If Leslie Hall was making top-secret cutesy recordings in her bedroom, or if Kimya Dawson sang a little more about various pastas, the result would be the sugary batch of songs that Ramona & The Swimsuits have crafted together. With sweet choruses and over-the-top DIY outfits, Ramona & The Swimsuits fit right in as openers for Leslie Hall on her most recent national tour.”

India winterim program strengthens students’ skills

For some, the portmanteau “winterim” might conjure up scenes of heavy snowfall and infinite boredom. But, for a group of seven University of Iowa Journalism and Mass Communication students, the term will forever describe a three-week period spent in southern India during Winter 2011.

The students took part in a course taught by SJMC Associate Professor Sujatha Sosale called “International Development Through Multimedia Storytelling.”

The class spent the first week at Visthar, a non-profit human rights organization in Bangalore, learning about contemporary agricultural problems facing India. Then, the students departed for Wayanad to interview farmers with the help of a translator.

Lately: Fun Web Projects

Though I have certainly been keeping myself busy with KRUI.FM and Java Blend lately, I thought it might be fun to showcase some websites I made for some recent classes.

1. Campus Frequency — This is a blog I kept for the entirety of last semester on the topic of college radio and how it fits into the greater landscape of American media

2. How to Become A Zine-Making Machine — This is a website I built last spring on the topic of zines, which are little DIY magazines that I like to make in my spare time

KRUI’S Hometown Holiday Series: Fairfield, Iowa

This was the first article in a series on KRUI.FM, urging shoppers to support local musicians during the holiday season:

As you go about your last-minute shopping in the coming days, don’t forget about Iowa’s youngest, best, and brightest movers and shakers— the music makers.

In the coming days, KRUI.FM will publish a series of articles which aim to highlight different music scenes in Iowa and illustrate how you can support them this holiday season.

We begin our 2011 KRUI Hometown Holiday festivities in Fairfield, Iowa.

Fairfield, a progressive town that is nearly ten thousand people strong, is located in southeastern Iowa, a little more than an hour’s drive from Iowa City. Home to the Maharishi University of Management, the town also boasts some of the strongest musical talent in the state.

Today at 4PM : Public Space One Fundraiser Show
Sunday at 4PM: KRUI Live From Public Space One
Wednesday at 8PM: Grand Tetons, Galaxies, and Otem Rellik
We are pretty fortunate to have such a great (and affordable) venue in our city. Be sure to support PS1 and check out some of these shows.

One Saturday, a few members of the 2011-2012 earthwords editorial staff visited “Live From 380.” These representatives of the University of Iowa’s undergraduate literary review talked about their Wandering Workshop event and the ever-approaching submission deadline for this year’s magazine.
